As spring approaches, Virgin Valley Artists Association gets ready for a grand March.
The themed exhibition of the month is entitled, “Off the Wall.” It will run March 1 through March 27. Bank of Nevada is sponsor of the exhibition.
One of VVAA’s premier photographers, Shirley Smith, is Artist of the Month of March. Her stunning work will be the focal point of the Mesa Gallery. Shirley, a resident of St George Utah, took up the study and hobby of photography in 2012 upon a request from Bruce, her husband, and she has not looked back to ‘life before camera’. Prior to photography, Shirley worked in the pharmaceutical industry in quality assurance. The move to Southern Utah from Michigan in December of 2013 opened up a whole new world of places to go to, to see, and to record! Her goal is to be able to capture them all with her camera!
Shirley is an award winning, internationally known photographer currently shooting with various Nikon DSLR/mirrorless cameras and lenses. Not only is her photographic work on display at the Mesquite Fine Art Center and Gallery 873 in the Kayenta Art Village, she has exhibited at the A Smith Gallery (TX), Arrowhead Gallery (UT), the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (NY), Dixie State University (UT), Red Cliff Gallery (UT), St George Art Museum (UT) and various venues in Michigan.
Her latest solo exhibition (Summer 2020) was at the St George Art Museum, “Alternative Vision” featured infrared, macro and abstract photography. Other solo exhibitions of Shirley’s work titled, “Mother Nature Through My Eyes” were presented in 2019 at the Springdale, UT community center and at Dixie State in the Grand Foyer of the Eccles Center in the summer of 2017. In December 2020, she received 3rd place in the Kolari Vision International Photo Contest for her visible light photo essay, “The Aftermath of the Magnum Fire”. She is the President of the Color Country Camera Club (St George, UT) and an active member of Arts to Zion (UT), the Southern Utah Artists Guild and Virgin Valley Artists’ Association (NV).
