The building industry in Mesquite held up well in May according to the City of Mesquite Building Department in spite of a general business lockdown attributed to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
A year ago, the city of Mesquite Building Department issued 11 permits for new homes with a valuation of $2.797 million. This May, the department issued 16 permits valued at $3.977 million. Overall permit valuations increased from $5.052 million last year to $7.791 million this year even though the total number of permits dropped by one from 126 last year.
Pulte Homes of Nevada, who usually leads the pack of homebuilders, did not take out any permits for new homes in Sun City Mesquite. Nevada Residential Construction (NRC) was issued nine permits last month. Maves Construction and Trade West Construction took out two permits each. Jackson Contracting, Inc., JG Enterprises, and a private builder received one permit each.
The most expensive single-family home construction permit was valued at $367,458 with the least expensive permit valued at $149,604.
The number of residential modification permits increased from 12 last year to 14 this year. However, the valuation of the permits dropped from $302,796 last year to $122,928 this year.
Holding up the overall number and value of permits is once again attributed to commercial construction. Five permits for a new storage facility on Auto Mall Circle next to the Ford dealership were issued with a total valuation of $3,227,150. One other commercial building permit was issued valued at $10,080.
In May 2019, the city only issued two permits for commercial buildings valued at $368,650.
Six permits for commercial modifications were issued last year valued at $658,592. This year only three permits in this category were issued with a valuation of $29,930.
The number of new business permits rose to five this year from three last year.
Block wall permits, usually an indication of future home construction, dropped from 19 permits last year valued at $475,223 to 14 this year valued at $103,847.
The building department issued three permits for swimming pools, valued at $63,020 compared to five permits last year, valued at $83,371.
Two grading permits were issued in May of this year compared to none last year. No demolition permits were issued in either year.

What wonderful news that Mesquite is getting a Panda Express. Love their food!

Yes, we need more food businesses for different choices. I think a Jimmy John’s or Inn and Out burgers would also be good additions. Along with a good bakery or deli. Go Mesquite, nv
